چکیده

Fruit flies selected to reproduce on the fifth day of adult life for many generations remarkably keep on living for six weeks, showing no change in lifespan. A mutation-accumulation experiment suggests that the same genes confer high early-life fitness and long life.

Bacteria as a new model system for aging studies: investigations using light microscopy.

Aging-the decline in an individual's condition over time-is at the center of an active research field in medicine and biology. Some very basic questions have, however, remained unresolved, the most fundamental being: do all organisms age? Or are there organisms that would continue to live forever if not killed by external forces? For a long time it was believed that aging only affected organism...

What determines longevity: Metabolic rate or stability?

Extract: The conventional wisdom about why species age and live as long as they do is based in part on the modern version of the very old and now discredited "rate of living" (ROL) theory of aging. According to the old ROL theory, aging is caused by the loss of some vital substance such as water or hormones - the more rapid the vital substance is used up the shorter the lifespan. The modern and...

A review of sunscreens and moisturizers compounds drived from cyanobacteria

One of the most important functions of the skin is to protect against various stressors. Environmental stimuli such as UV and environmental pollution increase reactive oxygen species and cause wrinkles and skin aging. Skin aging is associated with decreased collagen production and decreased activity of enzymes involved in collagen structure. Moisturizing chemicals increase the skin's ability to...

A proposal to sequence genomes of unique interest for research on aging.

THE recent sequencing of genomes, including the human genome, has revolutionized biomedical research. The projected genome sequencing of a large number of mammalian species, such as several primates, will offer extraordinary opportunities for studying genome evolution and to better understand the structure and dynamics of the human genome. Most target organisms for sequencing were chosen becaus...
